The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attested that one person passed on in a head-on crash between two vehicles which happened along Onitsha-Nteje Expressway in Anambra on Saturday.

Mr. Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, who confirmed the occurrence to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka, said the body of the man has been deposited at Wisdom Funeral Mortuary, Nteje.

Kumapayi said the incident which happened at around 2a.m. could be credited to speeding and unjust overtaking.

“The fatal accident involved a Lexus SUV with enrollment number GGE339FU, whose driver lost his life in the accident and a Mercedes Benz 911 with enlistment number XA588ENU.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV tried overtaking but unfortunately had a head-on crash with the Mercedes Benz 911, which couldn't give way.

"The dead casualty has been taken to Wisdom Funeral Mortuary Nteje while officers of the FRSC and Nigerian Police Force are on ground controlling traffic and freeing road from obstacle brought about by the accident,” he said.

Kumapayi said the vehicles had been towed to the police headquarters for further investigation.

The Sector Commander advised road users and drivers to cling to the government's mandates disallowing night travels from 8p.m. to 6a.m, particularly during the time of COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that people should stop traveling at night on the grounds that the odds of finding help in the night is less than during the day.

While condoling with the family of the deceased, he encouraged drivers to drive with care and cease from speeding, illegitimate overtaking, and all types of risky driving that could cause road crashes and avoidable death.
