Edo: 'I Tried Reconciling Oshiomhole & Obaseki's Conflict' - Oba Of Benin Laments Failed Attempts
Oba of Benin, Ewuare II
Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has lamented his failed efforts to reconcile the conflicts between the state's Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.

The Monarch expressed sadness over the recent happenings in the state and also urges the politicians involved in the forthcoming elections in Edo State to sheath their swords and not turn the state to a laughing stock.

He recalled the good relationship that existed between Gov. Obaseki and Oshiomhole and said he cannot tell what went wrong that led to the fierce face-off between the two politicians.

The royal father said this during a peace meeting held with top politicians at his palace in Edo State on September 2, 2020.

Oba Ewuare II added that he had put in several efforts to reconcile the two politicians stressing that he went as far as visiting President Muhammadu Buhari on the matter.

Ewuare II said;

“I was very sad, shocked; what I thought was going to be a smooth ride for everybody, tranquillity in the state, tranquillity in the kingdom, turned to unprecedented conflict.

“I could not believe it that I tried to intervene several times; I even went to the President about their matter.”

The Oba also urged the politicians not to kill themselves because of a position that will only last for four years, lamenting that everybody is afraid that the state would be set ablaze during and after the election.

He advises them to learn from the 2015 general election when former President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated the winner, President Muhammadu Buhari, thereby calming the tension that was on.

Those in attendance were Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, his Deputy, Philip Shaibu of APC, Chief Odigie Oyegun; Former National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the governorship candidate of the APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, his Deputy, Mr. Gani Audu, chairmen of the two parties in the state, among others.
