In commemoration of the 2020 World Teachers Day on Monday October 5, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special salary scale for teachers across the country.

According to reports, the President also extend the number of serving years of Nigerian teachers from 35 years to 40 years, adding 5 more years to the number of years they were to spend in service.

Speaking during the ceremony which was held in Abuja on Monday October 5, Buhari highlighted the importance of the teacher in the growth of any developing country using Nigeria as an example.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who represented Buhari, said the new salary scheme is to motivate teachers for greater productivity and effectiveness, as well as to encourage teachers in delivering better service.

The World Teachers’ Day is co-convened every year by UNESCO, UNICEF, the International Labour Organization and Education International.

According to UNESCO, this year's World Teachers’ Day is meant to celebrate teachers with the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future”

The World Teachers’ Day has been held annually on October 5 since 1994 to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

This burgeoning new platform also recalls that the federal government has also approved October 11 as reopening date for all Unity Schools in Nigeria.
